First run...

Distance: 1.1 miles
Time: 18:51
Avg. Pace:  17:12 min/mile.

I walked some, ran some and Ashley (my dog) ran with me. and now i am home...wiped out. but i got that horrendous first run out of my system. the next goal is simple: increase distance and start to lower the min/mile pace. also...run more, walk less.

I can tell how out of shape i am though. after the first walk/run cycle, i was breathing hard, my heart was pounding and i was actually surprised i could run for 30 seconds at a time and how short a distance a 30 second run seemed. a guy walking by with his dog asked if i was having trouble getting my rhythm going...i told him i was just getting going period and he said my stride was impressive for a first time run...so now i just have to get the strength and the energy going. so i suppose it could have been worse.

but for comparison...if i had had run a 17:12 min/mile pace at the marine corps marathon, i would have been riding home on the straggler bus...talk about a wounded ego....

now off to drink some water and start my normal weekend chores...

Thank GOD I am not aiming for my first 5K until March.

Geaux Saints! Who dat!

  1. Nice job on your first run! Don't think about pace at this point. Just one foot in front of the other. The speed will come later. Patience grasshopper.

  2. I agree with Michael.. Even though its hard, dont think about pace too much. As you build endurance and get stronger you WILL get faster. But at the same time, its easy to start out too fast. I learned in order to run more and longer distances that I needed to slow my pace down. Surprisingly running slower made my overall pace quicker.
